Before Camp Begins...
Guest post from Eddie Norgard, Associate Executive Director of Operations at Somerset Hills YMCA.
Dear Friends in Camping,
As we embark on a new camp season, I find myself filled with an overwhelming sense of gratitude and admiration for each of you. With the world around us increasingly polarized, marked by international conflicts, domestic divisions, relentless societal pressures, and the ever-present thief of joy—comparison—your dedication to youth development stands as a beacon of hope and positivity for hundreds if not thousands of children. This year, more than ever, I see our work as an opportunity to counteract these negative forces, to build bridges of understanding, and to nurture a sense of unity and compassion in our campers.
From the early morning wake-up calls to the late-night preparations, from the laughter-filled fields to the incredible outdoor adventures, you pour your heart and soul into creating a transformative experience for every child who comes through your gates. The impact you make on these young lives is immeasurable, and I stand in awe of your unwavering commitment to their growth and well-being.
In a world where uncertainty often prevails, your role as mentors and guides is crucial. Camp is more than just a place for outdoor exploration; it is a sanctuary where diversity is celebrated, kindness and empathy thrive, and core values are instilled that will shape the future of our world. You are the architects of this transformative experience, and through your efforts, love and positivity will win.
As you prepare to take on the challenges and joys of the upcoming season, I want to remind you of the importance of self-care. The work you are about to embark on is the hardest work, and it is essential that you find ways to take care of yourselves as well. Remember, to be the best for our campers, you must also be the best for yourselves. Pause, reflect, and recharge when needed. Your well-being is just as important as the well-being of the young minds and hearts you nurture.
Know that I see you, I appreciate you, and I am here for you. As we navigate the busy months ahead, I remain accessible and committed to being a source of support and friendship. Lean on your camp network, share your stories, and find strength in our shared purpose and passion. We are a community bound by a common goal—to make a positive impact on the lives of young people—and together, we are stronger.
As we step into this new season, let’s be hopeful and determinate that our work can indeed dismantle the negative forces around us. Let us embrace this opportunity to make a difference, knowing that every act of kindness, every lesson taught, and every moment of understanding helps build a better world. The world needs more people like you, and I am beyond honored to stand beside you in this journey of Youth Development.
Yours in Camping,
Eddie
